Tertiary wastewater treatment is a multi-stage treatment process that produces a high standard of effluent before it is discharged into the environment. The final stage of wastewater treatment is disinfection. This can be achieved with chlorine, ultraviolet radiation or ozone. Tertiary wastewater treatment plants are expensive, have complex systems with many components, and require electricity to operate. They require professional help in design, installation, and careful daily monitoring. Problems have arisen with turbid effluent for which ultraviolet radiation is not effective. Also, issues with the original design have been reported.
