This project was undertaken to provide operators of backcountry facilities more information about the life cycle costs and environmental impacts of various blackwater management options in alpine and high sub-alpine environments. Blackwater management options include pit toilets, the barrel fly-out system, incineration, composting, and user carryout. The information is intended to help operators decide which option would be best for their site.
BEES issued an RFP in January 2009. Seven proposals were received. Stantec was awarded the project. Results from the project have renewed the interest in composting toilets.
